Face Shape Chart: How to Read Your Result

Use a face shape chart in this order: record four measurements, find the largest line, compare face length with face width, and use the jawline as the tie-breaker. The four readings are forehead width, cheekbone width, jawline width, and face length. A chart becomes useful when it explains the close calls between rows instead of pretending every face fits one perfect box.

1. Prepare the Photo or Mirror View

Pull all hair away from the forehead and jaw. Use a straight-on mirror view or a front-facing photo, with no fringe covering the outline. Keep the head level while you inspect the chart. These are the first three operations because hair, tilt, and a three-quarter angle can change which part looks widest.

Do not begin with a celebrity comparison. Begin with the visible outline and the same view you will use for every row.

2. Record Four Lines

Use a flexible tape and a notebook or phone. The chart uses four lines:

  1. Forehead width: measure across the widest part, usually between the eyebrow area and the hairline.
  2. Cheekbone width: measure from the outer point of one cheekbone to the other.
  3. Jawline width: measure from the center of the chin to the point where one jaw angles upward toward the ear, then multiply that one-side reading by 2.
  4. Face length: measure from the center of the hairline to the tip of the chin.

The multiplication in step 3 matters. A one-side jaw reading cannot be compared directly with a full forehead or cheekbone reading. Write the four results in one order every time: forehead, cheekbones, jaw, length.

Two concrete examples from the chart method show why the measurements need context. One example records a face length of 8 inches and a widest width of 7 inches, which is close to a 1:1 length-to-width reading. Another records a 6-inch forehead, 6-inch cheekbones, a jawline calculated as 4.25 inches multiplied by 2, and an 8-inch face length. The second example does not produce one universal label until the four numbers are compared as a group.

3. Find the Widest Line First

The largest measurement gives the chart its first direction.

This first pass is a filter, not the final result. A pointed chin can support a heart or diamond reading, but it does not tell you whether the forehead or cheekbones create the dominant width.

4. Compare the Main Chart Rows

Round

Round usually means face length and cheekbone width are close, with the cheekbones as a possible widest area and a soft, rounded jaw. The 8-inch length and 7-inch widest-width example sits near the round-versus-square decision point because the ratio is close to 1:1. The jaw supplies the next check: a curved outline leans round.

Square

Square usually means the forehead, cheekbones, and jaw are similar, while face length is also close to the horizontal widths. The jaw is the key visual difference from round. Clear corners or a chiseled turn support square; a half-moon curve supports round.

Oval

Oval usually places face length above the main horizontal width. The jaw is narrower than the upper face and tends to look smoother. On a chart that separates outline from length, oval is a smooth outline with a longer vertical reading.

Oblong or rectangular

These rows also begin with a dominant face length. The forehead, cheekbones, and jaw may be close in width. Rectangular usually signals stronger angles, while oblong often means a longer version of oval or a long face with a strong jaw. A chart may use one label, two labels, or treat them as neighboring descriptions.

Heart

Heart places the forehead above the cheekbones and jaw, with the face narrowing toward a pointed chin. A pointed hairline can reinforce the impression, but the forehead-to-jaw order is the measurable clue.

Diamond

Diamond places cheekbones above both forehead and jaw. The chin may be pointed, so diamond and heart can look similar from the lower half of the face. The deciding question is where the widest line sits: forehead for heart, cheekbones for diamond.

Triangle or pear

Triangle puts the jawline first, cheekbones next, and forehead last. Pear also describes a narrower upper face above a wider lower face, but it may allow the jaw and cheekbones to be closer together. Some charts split these rows; others use pear as the broader label.

5. Handle the Conflicting Rows

The chart systems disagree in several specific places.

Four categories versus seven or more: one system groups outlines as oval, diamond, square, and hourglass. Another expands the map into round, square, diamond, oval, oblong, heart, pear, and triangle. A shorter chart is not automatically less useful; it answers a broader question.

Round versus square: both can have face length close to width. One row uses the soft jaw as its clue, while the other uses angular corners. The same measurements can therefore reach different rows when jaw shape is ignored.

Oval versus oblong or rectangular: all three can have length as the largest reading. One chart may call a long, smooth outline oval; another may call the same outline oblong. Rectangular adds stronger angular structure. The disagreement is partly about where the chart draws its border.

Heart versus diamond: both can end in a pointed chin. Heart makes the forehead the largest horizontal line; diamond makes the cheekbones the largest. The chin alone cannot settle this pair.

Triangle versus pear: both place visual weight low. Triangle requires a jaw-first order more clearly; pear can include a lower face where jaw and cheekbones are close. These are neighboring rows with different emphasis.

6. Keep a Secondary Row When Needed

A chart can return two useful descriptions. A long face with the jaw as its largest measurement can read as oblong and triangular. A smooth outline with a short vertical reading can read as oval in one system and round in another. Record the evidence beside the label:

The first term names the strongest overall pattern. The second records the measurement or outline feature that creates the overlap. This is more informative than erasing the second row.

7. Read the Chart After Styling Changes

Repeat the check with hair pulled back before judging a styled image. A middle part with long, straight hair can make length more prominent. A thick straight fringe can cut down the visible vertical line. Waves or curls can add width near the cheekbones and jaw. Contouring can make a square or round outline appear closer to heart.

The underlying measurement has not been redefined by the hairstyle. The visible emphasis has changed. Use the unstyled front view to select a chart row, then use the styled view to decide which feature you want to highlight.

8. A Practical Chart Checklist

Before accepting a row, confirm these six items:

  1. The photo or mirror view is straight on.
  2. The forehead and jaw are visible.
  3. All four readings are recorded in the same order.
  4. The widest line has been identified.
  5. Face length has been compared with the main width.
  6. The jaw has been marked rounded, angular, or pointed.

If a row still feels uncertain after those six checks, keep the nearest two rows. The chart is doing its job when it preserves the reason for the uncertainty.
